Forever Celia
American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora
DEC 13, 2018 - MAR 31, 2019
More than 400 people gathered at The Cuban American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, located on Coral Way, for the opening cocktail reception of a unique exhibition. For the first time in Miami, the public had the chance to view six decades of Celia Cruz’s personal belongings. On display were dozens of her vibrant costumes, platform shoes, and iconic, colorful wigs—red, purple, and even bright green—that reflect the joyful, affectionate spirit of this legendary Cuban artist. As an exile, Celia traveled the world spreading a message of hope and pride for her people. The exhibit also featured family photographs, awards, and her very first passport, issued at the start of her career with La Sonora Matancera.

Over the course of a career spanning six decades and taking her from humble beginnings in Havana, Cuba, to a world-renowned artist in the United States, Celia Cruz became the undisputed Queen of Latin Music. Combining a piercing and powerful voice with a larger-than-life personality and stage costumes, she was one of the few women to succeed in the male-dominated world of Salsa music. This exhibition in Washington, D.C., features costumes and other objects, photographs, and music samples from throughout her career.

This exhibit revisited the great moments of her inspiring life and her extraordinary career, on a journey through photos, records, objects, and stories within their contexts, which helped understand the space and time in which she lived. Accompanied by her eternal Azucar!, and through an immersive experience, you were able to see why Celia Cruz is the most important and universally recognized female figure in 20th-century Cuban popular music, whose work transcends the boundaries of her country in its international impact.
